Reading but Not Comprehending:  Understanding the Nature of Specific Reading Comprehension Deficit

Presented by Mercedes Spencer, Ph.D.

Tuesday, April 9, 2024

7:00 PM

Zoom

This presentation will focus on differentiating poor reading comprehension that results from dyslexia from poor reading comprehension that results from specific reading comprehension deficit.  Reading comprehension difficulties are frequently associated with weaknesses in decoding, but can also exist in the presence of adequate decoding skills.  The reading comprehension difficulties seen in children with specific reading comprehension deficit can be explained by weaknesses in oral language, but these children may also have other skill deficits.  This presentation will discuss the role of executive function in reading comprehension and its potential to further explain the reading comprehension difficulties observed in children with specific reading comprehension deficit.

Dr. Mercedes Spencer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University.  She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Florida State University and completed her postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University.  Her research aims to better understand children's reading and language development to identify factors that may contribute to difficulties in these areas.

A Certificate of Attendance can be provided upon request.

Current PLD/SE membership is required for CPDU credits.  Members will receive 1.5 CPDUs for this program.
